This Mannerist style 16th Century Portuguese Church is about 100 feet long and 42 feet wide. In the 1980's a longitudinal crack had developed in the centre of the vault enclosing the space and later caused dislocation of a few of the vault stones.

This structural distress was caused due to uneven settlement of the foundations. As this is a historic monument a conservation policy of minimum intervention as a principle was adopted. The priority for structural restoration was to arrest any further movement of the walls by underpinning the foundations.

The dislocated stones in the vault masonry were re-fixed, the cracks in the vault were stitched with stainless steel anchors and the vault masonry grouted. Ties were also fixed across the vault to prevent further movement. All repairs were carried out using appropriate lime mortars and grout mixes designed after extensive laboratory studies. The original surface of the chapel was restored largely by removing the older layers of lime-wash which had formed a half inch cake over the surface.

HISTORY
The brick and limestone building was built in 1895, as a home for a large family. In the 1960's it was converted into an office building. This change brought about pressures of providing adequate services and transformed the building insensitively.
RESTORATION OF FACADE
The red brick surface had been painted over in grey cement paint, completely transforming the the old English building. The main restoration task was to remove the grey cement paint from the facade without damaging the brick surface.
INTERIOR RESTORATION
The wooden structural system, and stone brackets, which were hidden behind the layers of plaster and cladding, or false ceiling were uncovered to restore the elegant ambience of timber constructed spaces.
